October 16 Meeting Discussed “Putting the ‘Active’ in Active Living”

Just about every activity Villagers participate in as residents is impacted in some way by the Recreation Department, under the management of Brian Gruner, Friends of the Village’s October 16 speaker.

Brian Gruner 10-16-18BRIAN GRUNER, Recreation and Special Events Director for Laguna Woods Village, discussed “Recreation: Putting the ‘Active’ in Active Living” on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at 6:30 pm in the Village Performing Arts Center (PAC), Dining Room 1. Light refreshments were served.  The meeting was open free to all residents and their guests and included an audience Q&A.


After nearly 10 years of providing accurate information to help residents of Laguna Woods Village make informed decisions about our community, Friends of the Village is going on haitus. The Recreation Department
oversees all clubhouses, sports areas, and most other shared facilities, as well as our 250+ clubs and an active schedule of classes and entertainment for residents. Under Brian’s leadership, a Fourth of July fireworks show was begun in 2017 (below) and is now a beloved annual event. Rising to the moment during some scorching days last summer, Recreation initiated free movies in the comfort of the PAC Auditorium. Another big win with residents! On October 16, Brian provided an overview of the responsibilities and planning that the Recreation Department does — along with some vision for the future.


BRIAN GRUNER has been working in the field of recreation and community services for over 20 years and has an MBA from the University of Phoenix. His career started as a recreation leader with the City of Mission Viejo in 1993, where he became a recreation and Community Services Supervisor in 2008.

Brian has worked in every facet of recreation, from event planning and management to managing recreation facilities and coordinating senior, youth, and adult programs and activities. He proudly joined Village Management Services, Inc. in September, 2016, as the Recreation and Special Events Director. Brian’s responsibilities include: all clubhouse management, policy and governance of recreation policies, facility maintenance, staff development and training, oversight of clubhouse programs and activities, aquatics, Performing Arts Center, Clubhouse 4 Arts and Crafts, Equestrian Center, Golf Course, and Golf Maintenance.

Brian’s vision for the community and its recreation amenities is “to provide superior services and programs, through excellence in customer service and innovation that will enhance our residents’ quality of life.”

Brian is the proud father of three kids: Ashley (14), Mikayla (10,) and Dylan (7). He has been married to his high school sweetheart, Christy, for 19 years.
