Since it is the stated purpose of Friends of the Village to “provide accurate information to help residents of Laguna Woods Village make informed decisions,” this program was of special importance to us.

Whether started accidentally or intentionally, rumors can do serious damage — especially in communities like Laguna Woods Village where news quickly travels from neighbor to neighbor.

How do rumors get started and how can we counteract them?

JOAN MILLIMAN, Ph.D., Secretary of the Golden Rain Foundation (GRF) and Chair of the GRF Media & Communications Committee, and EILEEN PAULIN, Marketing and Communications Manager for Village Management Services, Inc., shared the platform for this informative program on June 19, 2018 in Dining Room 1 of the Laguna Woods Village Performing Arts Center.
Both agreed that rumors are not always bad; in fact, they are a necessary part of human communication, arising out of people’s basic need to know. Joan set the scene with an overview of past and present research on how and why rumors behave as they do. Eileen explained what the Village is doing to provide timely, accurate information and to counteract inaccurate information when necessary.

Rumors, it turns out, are driven by real curiosity and the desire to know more information.
Eileen Paulin cropped-editedEILEEN PAULIN, Marketing and Communications Manager for Village Management Services, Inc., discussed how rumors start and spread in a community like Laguna Woods Village – the purposes they can serve, the damage they can do, and what to do about them.
